Summer time is probably, by all accounts, the best time to be a kid. No school, no responsibilities, just fun and good times. However, for child models, there are still some things that need to be considered. If they want to maintain their status in the modeling world they must keep their look so that once summer is over and they go back to work, they hit the ground running. There are a lot of common mistakes parents make with their kids during the summer time and we are here to help you avoid those. We think it’s best to take these tips into account through the summer, and/or if you live somewhere where it tends to stay hot. We want to make sure you understand that we still want kids to have fun, but keep these tips in mind when making those summer plans with them!
The most important key for a fun and healthy summer is avoiding sunburns. While we know that summer is best spent outdoors, you must protect your child model from getting sunburnt, first and foremost for health reasons, but also because you don’t want them getting a callback or an audition and showing up red as a lobster. Make sure to apply tons of sunscreen, and reapply every hour they’ll be out in the sun. A nice bronze can be helpful, but a sunburn will always be out of style.
Getting that summer tan is a wonderful thing. The olive color that many get after beach days is something we all strive to have, however, on the flip side, a farmer's tan needs to be avoided at all costs. Make sure that your child is wearing the proper clothing when necessary to avoid T-shirt or sock tans. Nothing looks worse on a child model than tan lines on their ankles and elbows. We suggest either fully covering up by wearing long sleeve swim shirts, or keeping their tans in check by use of sunscreen and sun avoidance.
Another sun centered tip is the changing of hair color. This is mostly applicable to blonde haired children, but everyone should take their hair health seriously especially during summer. While summer time is pool season, the more often they are swimming in the pool, the more likely blonde hair may turn a tinge of green, or the ends may get dried out. This happens because of the chlorine used to clean pools. Also, the longer they are in the sun, the more burnt their hair will get, and it will dry up all the oils, leaving it a bit crispy. Make sure your child wears a hat in order to keep their hair safe, and if they are avid swimmers, wear a swim cap.
Now for a fashionable tip. As child models they are always expected to be in style. By staying up to date on clothing trends, and taking pictures to upload to social media, they will demonstrate to future casting directors that they know what’s in. The best way is to simply grab magazines and see what the stars are wearing. They can also keep up with the latest fashion trends on social media, and emulate them in their daily lives.
At Bensimon Model and Talent, we want to give your child the best possible opportunities for success in the child modeling industry. Staying safe from the sun in the summer is a key aspect to maintaining their look. By wearing trendy outfits, they will be seen as fashionistas in their own lives, which quickly translates to the modeling industry. We hope your children enjoy their summer, and remember to use it to catapult their careers to the next level.
